The Watchtower, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Education

This is the second part of Mad Sweeney’s articles on JWs and education. A young person contemplating college in the mid-1960s when the Watchtower published this article in the Awake! would be in his 60s now. Imagine the many thousands of people whose thoughts and emotions were manipulated and indoctrinated by this propaganda, and then fearfully avoided education as something “dangerous and detrimental.” How many of these young Jehovah’s Witnesses actually followed the Society’s advice? Far too many to count, we’re afraid. Where are they now? What are they doing? How are they faring financially?
Sweeney quotes directly from the Watchtower’s own publications to make his point. Hear the Society’s own representatives explain their illogical and damaging policy.

A Young Man’s Decision

Part 1 of Mad Sweeney’s two part series on ‘The Watchtower, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Education.” Although this article is a fictional recreation of many real life stories, it is accurate in its details about the decisions that many young JWs were forced to make in the years prior to 1975.

Would they continue their education, learn a profession or technical skill and prepare for the rest of their lives? Or would they follow the Watchtower’s advice and prepare for Armageddon? For many older JWs, the choices that they made between 1968 and 1975 have forever established their adult lifestyles – many living on the edge with limited resources, no medical insurance, and few retirement funds.

District Convention “New Light” Review – 2

“Mad Sweeney” continues his comments on the last major segment of the 2011 “Let God’s Kingdom Come” District Conventions: The final convention segment I think important to talk about is also the final part of the entire convention. It relates to the hype mentioned earlier in this article about the graphic found on the reverse side of the convention invitation. In case the image on the screen is difficult to read, the text is as follows: Jesus taught his followers to pray: “Let your kingdom come.” (Matthew 6:10) What is God’s Kingdom? When will it come, and with what effect? The answers to these questions are contained in the fulfillment of a prophetic dream that was recorded by the prophet Daniel over 2,500 years ago. – Daniel 2:31-45. Why should you be interested in that dream? Because its fulfillment will have a direct impact on the lives of everyone living … Continue reading

District Convention “New Light” Review – 1

“Mad Sweeney” comments on the 2011 “Let God’s Kingdom Come” District Conventions: I’d like to write a bit about what is going on at the district conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses this summer. There is always a lot of buzz about the conventions among Jehovah’s Witnesses and their families. Witnesses are looking forward to the new releases of books and DVDs, and are ever-hopeful for what they call “new light.” Leading up to the conventions, the Watchtower Society always prints out color invitations that are ostensibly for the Witnesses to distribute in their territories. However, for all practical intent their real purpose is to arouse enthusiasm among the Witnesses themselves. This year’s district convention invitation seems to have done just that. I have heard from some friends and family still in the Watchtower that their friends are all up in excitement over the convention this year, and much of it is … Continue reading
